What will a MindSights Evaluation Cost?

As mentioned in the Services section of this website, a psychological evaluation typically requires many hours of professional time.

Our hourly rate for most psychological services is $285. This includes time spent interviewing the individual and/or important people in their life, administering psychological tests, analyzing/interpreting the data, preparing a detailed report, and debriefing the results. Because of the time required, the total cost for all services included in one of our assessments is often between $3990 – $5700.

More limited/focused assessments can cost much less. For example, intellectual and academic assessments solely for the purpose of identifying giftedness range from $700 to $1500, depending on the age of the child and the specific tests requested. Very complicated assessments, in which we integrate comprehensive cognitive/neurodevelopmental, mental health, and academic test results, can run a bit more.

We do believe that competently-provided and individually-tailored assessments can be extremely beneficial to people and their families alike. The benefits, however, can be reduced if the cost of the assessment creates financial stress. We therefore urge people to carefully consider whether psychological assessment services fit into the family budget.

Commercial Insurance Coverage

Early in our careers, we realized that contracting with private/commercial insurance companies can interfere with our ability work in the client-centered manner we believe is essential to quality psychological services. Therefore, MindSights has opted not to enroll with private insurance panels and is considered out-of-network providers for reimbursement purposes.

If you would like to use private health plan benefits to help defray the costs of services, MindSights will bill them to obtain any reimbursement you may be entitled under your health plan. It is important to bear in mind that out-of-pocket costs will usually be higher when people utilize non-contracted providers for psychological services. You are encouraged to contact your health insurance company directly to determine the level of coverage included in your plan.

When working with most private/commercial health plans, depending on estimated insurance reimbursement, we do require a prepayment at the beginning of the psychological assessment process. This will be applied to the costs of services. If the combination of the prepayment and any insurance reimbursement results in overpayment, the difference will be promptly refunded to you.

Coverage Through Oregon Health Plan

MindSights is contracted with two OHP providers: HealthShare/CareOregon and PacificSource Community Solutions. To initiate services for OHP members, please have the member’s current mental health provider send us information describing the diagnostic clarification they need to advise further treatment and/or therapy.

Your right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” for requested medical services

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services. At MindSights, we have extended this courtesy to all patients, regardless of insurance status.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs like psychological test administration, written interpretation of test data, collateral information gathering, and debriefing results with relevant parties.

Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.

Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.
